The MTR® System for the construction of an apartment complex of large numbers

In via Amendola, in Bari, the construction of one of the biggest quality apartment complexes builted in the last years in Bari is drawing to a close. Its name is AbiParco and it will be the new gathering place of the city, a green lung at a stone’s throw from the centre. Metal.Ri has taken care of the structural calculation and the provision of MTR® beams for the entire complex.

A residential building designed to obtain high comfort and minimum impact on the environment, where winter heating, summer cooling, and sanitary hot water production take place with the minimum energy expenditure by exploiting the energy of the sun. An apartment complex made up of 5 staircases with 142 housing units of various surface areas, 13 floors and 18 accommodation typologies.

“We used the MTR® system for our building site in via Amendola in Bari because, due to the considerable height of the building, the joint effect of seismic and wind action forced us to have beams of considerable size along the perimeter, which would have caused problems with the rolling shutter boxes and therefore with the height of doors and windows.”

The advantages of the MTR® system: hidden beams and rapidity of execution

“With the MTR® system we managed to solve the problem perfectly, building hidden beams on all the decks. The other great advantage was the rapidity of execution of the decks, which is particularly important for a vertical development building.” – says Engineer Locorotondo.

Besides the speed, it is important to highlight the organisation that prefabrication allows in a site. A light prefabrication like that of MTR® beams, combined with widely used prefabricated slabs, fully completes the horizontal structure. The MTR® system, a steel-concrete composite structures, integrated in a traditional reinforced concrete system, improves structural performances and construction organisation. In fact, the prefabricated elements arrive directly to the building site and are ready for the laying, without the need for additional processing.

For this residential project, MTR® T beams have been chosen, the ideal solution for buildings of this type. The MTR® T beam is not self-supporting and must be laid on a formwork or a predalles slab. With MTR® T beams it is possible to built hidden beams where the ordinary reinforced concrete does not allow it, as remarked by the engineer of the Gruppo Fanelli.

The underground garages have been realised with MTR® T beams on predalles slabs to guarantee the project R120 (fire resistance), everything with big structural meshes in the slab package. An impossible result with a normal reinforced concrete structure.

“The prefabrication of the trussed beam has let us save time in the phase of the assembly of the beam reinforcements, using less shoring and framework, for a greater environmental sustainability of the building site. And for these reasons, I would suggest a colleague of mine the use of the MTR® system.

Engineer Locorotondo’s positive judgement goes on: “I would always adopt the MTR® technology for building sites similar to that of via Amendola in Bari or for building sites where the use of beams with unusual span might be required.
