The new MSC cruise terminal in Bari is an ambitious project that will revolutionize the reception of cruise passengers in Puglia's capital city. Construction of the terminal, located in the port of Bari, is already underway and is expected to be completed in 2025.
This hub will become a reference point in the Mediterranean, designed to handle the fast-growing influx of passengers. The project is the result of close cooperation between MSC Cruises, the South Adriatic Sea Port Authority and others in the industry.
The port of Bari represents one of the main gateways to southern Italy and the Balkan area.
Bari, thanks to this infrastructure, will strengthen its position among the main Italian and international cruise destinations.
The numbers of the project
The project, with 3950sqm of indoor area plus 3250sqm of outdoor area(7200sqm total), covers a length of about 100m by a depth of 33m. The body of the building reaches a height of 11m beyond which there is a canopy serving the roof plane that houses the elevator shaft serving the three levels of the Terminal (ground floor, plus two floors in elevation).
The new facility will offer passengers a state-of-the-art experience, with dedicated reception, service and boarding areas designed to the latest architectural and technological standards.
Technology and environment: the new terminal under the banner of sustainability
The innovative aspect of the new MSC cruise terminal in Bari is evident from the earliest design stages. In fact, the facility is built with a focus on environmental sustainability. Solutions have been adopted to reduce the ecological impact of the terminal, such as theuse of low-impact materials and efficient energy management systems. In addition, the strategic location in the port will optimize logistics flows and reduce emissions from ship and land traffic. These cutting-edge choices aim to make the terminal not only afunctional infrastructure, but also a model of sustainability for the future.
The benefits of MTR® System for the project.
A key role in the construction of the new terminal is played by our company Metal.Ri, with the provision of innovative solutions for the construction of the structure.
Introducing our construction system of mixed steel-concrete truss beams MTR® System, we have ensured strength, design freedom and speed of erection.
The system is based on the use of intra-roofed MTR® A beams associated with a predalles slab floor.
Specifically, the following were used for this site. MTR® A self-supporting beams with spans covering a range of 8-12 meters, capable of bearing loads varying from 1000 kg/sqm to 2600 kg/sqm, depending on the different areas of the terminal. Thanks to this technical solution, which combines formwork and reinforcement in a single element, it was possible to minimize the formwork burdens for the construction company (especially in the presence of 4.5-meter high interplanes), which would have had a significant impact on the total cost of the intervention.
The use of the MTR® System also proved crucial for the economic and logistical management of the project.
The MTR® A beamsfor large overhangs, requiring shoring only at the cantilevered part, simplified the construction process and reduced the time required.
In addition, the project includes some openings in the deck that would have required the use of formwork and sidings to create them. Thanks to the MTR® main and secondary beam system, it was possible to eliminate the need for formwork at these openings, an aspect that further accelerated the work.
The whole thing was made with CAM-certified MTR® elements (Minimum Environmental Criteria) to meet the environmental sustainability requirements set for the project and contributing to the construction of a work in line with the most advanced ecological standards.
The future of the port of Bari with the new terminal
Thanks to these technological solutions, the new MSC cruise terminal in Bari will not only be a state-of-the-art facility, but will become a symbol of innovation and sustainability for the entire Mediterranean. With the increase in cruise traffic expected in the coming years, Bari is set to become one of the most important hubs for maritime tourism in Italy.
